Something Solid DDS Double Dissipating Shelf

The DDS (Double Dissipating Shelf) takes the recipe as found in the standard DS2 (Dissipating Shelf mk2) and, as the name suggests, doubles it!

That means that here there are four layers to the design instead of two, on the top is a layer of end grain balsa wood, then beneath it is bonded to a thin plywood layer, then another balsa layer and finally another thin plywood layer as the base. This is all wrapped in a plywood cosmetic trim that covers the edges. 

Despite this resulting in a slightly thicker shelf it's almost 20% lighter, as the plywood mass component has been reduced without losing strength due to the sandwich construction. So not only are there two balsa wood layers working to dissipate the vibration there's even less mass to store the energy. A win-win if ever there was one.

This takes all the strengths of the DS2 shelf and takes them further, the sound is even faster, freer, and more dynamic and combined with a touch less added colour/character (and that's saying something!).

The shelves are remarkably strong considering their design and can be used under heavy equipment without issue (items with spiked feet will sink into the balsa but unless exceptionally thin, long and sharp this will not be a problem).

  

Due to the use of blocks of Balsa there can be visible gaps on the upper surface, this is quite normal and to be expected from this material.
