The ProAc D48 is a substantial speaker in all respects, from its near 40kg weight to the solidity of the sound it produces. It's a bold, full sound that fills rooms with music and has a natural, fatigue free presentation that encourages long listening sessions.
The two treated paper bass/mid cones with their abnormally large dust covers have a smooth midband performance, and are ported to the outside world through a port that faces down onto the speakers integral plinth, which helps reduce some of the criticality of positioning to a degree, making them relatively easy to position (for a speaker with the extended low frequency performance that these speakers can deliver). These drivers, like all well made paper cones, sound very natural, they appear to exhibit a low character of their own without ever sounding thin, synthetic or harsh like many alternative materials.
Unusually there is a choice of tweeters, for the same cost you can choose between either a soft dome tweeter or a ribbon tweeter.
In perhaps slightly controversial fashion I favour the Dome tweeter version of the speaker over Ribbon Tweeter one. I find the dome to integrate more seamlessly with the mid range, the dispersion, dynamic and tonal character being more closely matched to the other drivers.
Saying that, the ribbon tweeter version is still a very fine speaker, so I would not dissuade anyone who has their heart set on it, it produces fine detailing.
Regardless of tweeter choice, these speakers are simultaneously both mature and fun to listen to, with the ability to reproduce the scale of a recording very believably whilst keeping the listener engaged in the musicians skills.
