This is a package of the AT-VM95SP 78rpm cartridge pre mounted in the factory in Japan to the Audio Technica AT-HS6BK headshell. This makes for an almost plug and play solution for users with S or J shaped tonearms that have the industry standard 'SME' removeable headshell.
This SP (which stands for Short Play) cartridge features a stylus profile designed for playback of 78rpm records only. It uses the same body as all the other models in the new AT-VM95 series, so you can easily buy and then retrofit one of the other styli in their range (please see our other listings) for playback of conventional LPs (please note you will have to change the tracking force when swapping between a LP and 78 styli).
The cartridge body produces an output out of both channels (i.e. there's a mono signal coming out of the left and right outputs) so it is recommended that for lowest surface noise a Mono button is used on your amplifier (if available), but it will work into a normal stereo input.
For the serious archiver with a specialised phono preamplifier/equaliser the two channel output allows different combinations to be tried to find the lowest surface noise (i.e. Mono L+R, Mono L, Mono R, LR Variable Mix) which allows professional archivers to minimise noise and distortion by sampling the least damage side of the grooves from an old record.
A 3mil stylus tip is used to minimise surface noise, this is a bonded tip on an aluminium cantilever.
