The AN-S8 is the sixth model up in the Audio Note range of step up transformers. Compared to the model beneath it, the S5 features large Super Mumetal 250 cores wired throughout with pure silver wire.
The output connections are via hard wired Audio Note Purple Pallas II silver cables, which help minimise the number of connections the delicate signal has to pass through.
Like the rest of the range, their step up enclosures are made from copper, and there's a copper clamp that secures and damps the transformer enclosures. The mu-metal encased transformers are made by Audio Note using their extensive experience of core materials and winding technology.
There are three versions available, the AN-S8L where the 'L' for Low, which at 3 Ohms is intended for very low output and impedance cartridges - primarily the Audio Note Io range.
The AN-S8M where the 'M' stands for Medium provides a 20 Ohm input impedance and is ideally suited to most other low impedance MC cartridges with an internal impedance of 5 to 7 Ohms.
The AN-S8H where the 'H' stands for High is suited to very high impedance MC cartridges as it presents a 400 Ohm input impedance and is recommended for cartridges with a 100 to 133 Ohm internal impedance.
*It is possible to use transformers with cartridges that have greater internal impedance, or values that are outside the preferred ranges of the switchable inputs, however, it is important to realise that an input impedance in the region of three to four times the internal impedance of your cartridge will usually provide the best results.
