The AN-S2 is the second model up in the Audio Note range of step up transformers. Over the entry level version these have even high quality cores and the sonic benefits is improved tonality, as they're more naturally richer and weightier along with a slight reduction in grain and hash, so a very nice upgrade over the already very good AN-S1 model. 

Like the rest of the range, their step up enclosures are made from copper, and the mu-metal encased transformers are made by Audio Note using their extensive experience of core materials and winding technology. 

There are two versions available, the AN-S2L where the 'L' for Low, which is intended for very low output and impedance cartridges - primarily the Audio Note Io range. It has a switch for the option of 3 Ohms (for the Io models) or 12 Ohms (for most cartridges with an internal impedance of 3 to 4 Ohms*).

The AN-S2H where the 'H' stands for High is suited to most other cartridges on the market and can be switched between 15 Ohms (for cartridges with an internal impedance of 4 to 5 Ohms) and 60 Ohms (for cartridges with an internal impedance of 15 to 20 Ohms*).

*It is possible to use transformers with cartridges that have greater internal impedance, or values that are outside the preferred ranges of the switchable inputs, however, it is important to realise that an input impedance in the region of three to four times the internal impedance of your cartridge will usually provide the best results.
