The AN-LA speaker cable is a litz copper cable from Audio Note which unusually includes an outer screen. It has a good cross section of conductors in a dumbbell style layout and has a well balanced sound, with a potent low end performance that is taught and controlled too.

Being a litz design (where each strand of wire is individually insulated from its neighbour) brings about the usual improvements, there's a clarity and focus, that's missing from normal cables which invariably sound a little muddled and messy at higher frequencies in comparison. A litz design brings greater retrieval detail too, the downside is they tend to be slightly more capacitive which might make them a bit more amplifier critical. On this point...

The cable can be wired in two ways, for use with 'unconditionally stable' amplifiers (i.e. all valve amplifiers we can think of and some solid state amplifiers) the screen can be connected, this helps to reduce noise radiated and received (this is not audible noise as such, but that does not mean that it does not have an effect on the sound). This does however make the cable much more capacitive, and this is why it could upset some solid state amplifiers as it could cause them to oscillate and cause damage to themselves and possibly the connected speaker.

If there are concerns about this capacitance then the screen can be left disconnected, in which case it will be safe with almost all amplifiers (bar some borderline designs that are intended to be used with specific cables). We can sell this cable unterminated, but due to the screen and litz construction it is a difficult cable to terminate, so I would only recommend it to experienced DIYers with the right tools/techniques for removing the coating from the wire.
