This deck does not have conventional suspension, instead is uses multiple levels of magnetic decoupling - in the feet, chassis and platter, so there are no springs to adjust - it’s almost plonk and play. Basic setup is limited to undoing transit bolts, levelling the feet and fitting the tonearm (which I’ll come back to in a couple of paragraphs).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe massive platter weighs just over 10kg, is internally damped with a thermoplastic elastomer and is topped with an integral vinyl mat. It sits on a ceramic topped inverted bearing, and the magnetic repulsion system reduces wear. A substantial record weight is also supplied and it’s clear that the deck has been designed around it, as it is beneficial to the sound, and thankfully it’s a joy to use and can be added whilst the platter is spinning. Electronic speed switching of 33.3 and 45rpm is controlled by buttons on the top of the plinth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eApart from the massive platter, the thing that grabs you on first glance is the tonearm. It’s a thing of real beauty, and it’s a wonder how Project can produce it for the price. Based around a unipivot design, but with the stability of a conventional tonearm, this 10” long arm is one of the nicest to set up I’ve ever experienced - with alignment adjustable without tools, and the vta done via a thumb screw (albeit it locked off with an allen key). The headshell is removable, so swapping between different cartridges within the space of just a couple of minutes becomes a real possibility if you buy additional headshells - great for those people that also want to run a mono cartridge option or simply like experimenting.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAll of this technical prowess is for nothing if it doesn’t sound special, but thankfully it does. Most obviously the sound is big, smooth and powerful. Surface noise is exceptionally low, and the music appears out of an extremely black background - a sign of a very well damped design. It’s a three way design with horn loading covering the mid range and treble and a powered bass system covering lower frequencies. The result is a speaker with the remarkable benefits of horn loading but in a reasonably compact box, yet still offering a massive efficiency of 107dB and very wide bandwidth.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe key with any speaker is how it handles the mid range, and this is where the Avantgarde speakers are exceptional. On the Uno XD a large 500mm diameter horn loads a special non compression drive unit which features a paper domed surface. No crossover is used at all, the horn itself (and the chamber in front of it) effectively filter unwanted frequencies without the need for passive or active electronics. Above 3kHz a compression tweeter on a short horn is used, the crossover benefiting from Avantgardes CPC technology, which uses the audio signal to pre bias the capacitors meaning that they do not suffer from any dielectric ‘crossover distortion’.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBass horns have to be massive to reproduce even relatively high bass frequencies, so here two ten inch bass units with stiff suspension and a sealed box help produce taught and fast low frequencies that are adept at keeping up with the lightning responses of the horn loaded parts of the speaker in a much smaller space. To drive these two 500 watt amplifiers feed them per channel (so yes, there’s a kilowatt per channel), and the low pass crossover is done with DSP which makes the speakers incredibly advanced, a small display on the rear enables the basics to be adjusted but things get really interesting when a computer is connected (via USB or Ethernet). Naturally not everyone will want to do this themselves, we are of course only too happy to install and setup the speakers. What the DSP brings to the party is not only the ability to fine tune the blend between low and mid frequencies (by changing  crossover rate and frequency) to your satisfaction but also the ability to correct any low frequency room resonance's.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEnough of the boring technicalities, it’s the results that matter, and what Avantgarde have achieved here is seriously impressive. Across all frequencies the sound has incredible immediacy, dynamics and scale - the elements that help make sound life like and life sized too, and these speakers, like all good horn speakers, get you several steps closer to feeling that the musicians are in the room than any other technology I can think of.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUnlike some of the breed, this isn’t a speaker that excels with a limited number of genres, it sounds believable with any good material, having the dynamic contrast, bandwidth and low distortion opens up recordings of all sorts as well as facilitating listening levels at both extremes and everything in between with an effortlessly clean sound. Colouration is pleasing low and the transparency great - you really can hear every change made to a system with excellent clarity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs one speaker that does it all, in a reasonably sized enclosure, this must be high up anyone's list of speakers to hear. The phono stage is a very good quality design too, and not simply an afterthought like many. Sonically it's quite difficult to pigeonhole, as it's balanced and neutral in presentation with frequency extremes that are superbly resolved. There's real heft and definition to the bass, combined with an openness and transparency to the high frequencies, and a mid that has a rightness of tonality that is quite uncommon. Speed and dynamics are quite shockingly good too. What this all means is that it doesn't favour one style of music, it just excels everywhere, so a firm recommendation for a killer cartridge at a fairly accessible price point.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"plain\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"plain\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"plain\"\u003eThanks to the large square body is a doddle to align (although users without easy VTA adjustment may want to note it is quite a tall cartridge, and their width at the rear can cause problems in some cramped headshells - if in doubt please just ask).
