This helps shield the sensitive audio circuitry (in the lower part of the chassis beneath the stainless steel top plate) from the radiation generated by the mains transformer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design uses a pair of 6922 dual triode valves in a classic passive EQ RIAA setup, and thanks to the low noise design it can work with a wide range of MM cartridges. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt has a transparent sound that is very revealing without being overly analytical in presentation. This much more time consuming construction technique has numerous benefits, it facilitates positioning components in three dimensions resulting in shorter signal paths and less component interaction, it reduces the number of joints the signal has to go through and means that only component legs rather than PCB tracks pass the signal, with all the benefits that brings in conductor and insulation quality. What this means sonically is greater transparency and an even more natural and organic presentation. Parts quality is also improved over the standard mk1 variant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike all good single ended amplifiers these have remarkable speed and openness, and an ability to drive speakers that belies their low rated power output. A touch of feedback is used which helps both with linearity of the pentode valves as well as ameliorate impedance variations in the connected loudspeakers. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese amplifiers really do show just how good the often overlooked and underrated EL34 valve can sound. It seems churlish to try to describe the sound in such simplistic terms, but there's a natural 'meaty' warmth to the tone that sounds very true to the instruments being reproduced, in fact they're only a whisker away from the rightly lauded 300B in this respect. These amplifiers are a labour of love, and are hugely time consuming to produce, taking dozens of hours each to assemble. They feature very high quality components throughout, all housed in their substantial aluminium and polished stainless steel casework. The amplifiers have a volume control on the front (can be deleted if required) to allow gain adjustment for the wide variety of systems they work well with - from average tom ultra high efficiency speakers, for example.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey use two 300B valves per channel run in zero feedback parallel single ended and produce a claimed 20 watts per channel. The design is distinct from other models in the Audion range with a 'self cancelling' output stage and the sound reflects this. Put simply they are extremely transparent and it makes it very difficult to pin point their sound. As you’d expect with a great single ended amplifier their dynamics and speed are second to none, the 300B valves bring a tactility to the sound that larger triodes struggle to match and are just as at home with the reproducing the subtlest of guitar fret work as they are an orchestra at full tilt. Wound in house with copper wire at the Audion factory, the transformers are housed in screening cans and connected with silver hook up wire to high quality gold plated RCA sockets. What this means sonically is greater transparency and an even more natural and organic presentation. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe output transformers are much larger and more sophisticated and are undoubtedly responsible for this amplifiers great weight and substance, it belies its low power output and can drive almost any well designed speaker exceptionally well.
